In November 1989, the trade magazine FonoForum wrote: "This production of Tosca, stark and full of dramatic intent, has been indispensable to the catalogues since its first appearance. Great operatic theater on record in a way that is seldom achieved today. Pretre also excels himself on the podium. The sound is immediate and raw".
On this recording, Maria Callas as Floria Tosca, Carlo Bergonzi as Mario Caravadossi and Tito Gobbi, in the role of Baron Scarpia, set radiant standards that are almost unequaled to the present day.
The recordings are now available in unprecedented sound quality. The original analogue recordings from 1964 form the basis of Christoph Stickel's unobtrusive "refurbishing" which aims to avoid any artistic intervention.
